For those who have not yet heard of OpenAI, it is one of tech’s top AI research labs. The idea behind their organization is to focus on building AI for artificial intelligence research. This means that they are doing what Google does best and developing technologies so that we can relate better with our computers and devices as well as learn about how they work.
OpenAI has rolled out a new technology called GPT-3. You may have heard about it, but what exactly is it and how is it going to change the way we do SEO?
Who Is OpenAI?
OpenAI is a research organization. It is made up of two companies: the for-profit corporation OpenAI LP and its non-profit parent company OpenAI Inc. DeepMind is considered a competitor to this company, which conducts research in the field of AI. Their objective is to promote socially beneficial technologies that can benefit humanity at large. In late 2015 along with Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others, the organization was founded in San Francisco. They collectively pledged US$1 billion. Musk stepped down from the board in February 2018 but remains a donor. OpenAI has signed a deal with Microsoft to earn a $1 billion investment in 2019.
What is GPT-3?
Well, GPT-3 stands for pre-trained Transformer. As a neural network, GPT-3 is capable of learning from raw data like text or images, without needing predefined patterns to teach it. It does this by creating its own patterns and adjusting based on feedback. This new technology is going to change the way we do SEO because it will create new information structures that are not currently possible with the existing methods that are being used today.
In June 2020, OpenAI announced GPT-3, a language model trained on trillions of words from the Internet. It also announced that an associated API, named simply “the API”, would form the heart of its first commercial product. GPT-3 is aimed at natural language answering of questions, but it can also translate between languages and coherently generate improvised text.
OpenAI has released its GPT-3 code as an API-accessible subscription model. Only those who apply and get approved manually by the OpenAI team can use their technology to build an application using their GPT-3. This means that these companies can now train their own data sets and learn things that were somewhat impossible before, such as designing new logos, new pieces of art, or even creating new jokes. While they may not be as hilarious and witty as some stand-up comedians I have heard, they will probably get a few chuckles from somebody.
How OpenAI Learns What To Write
The best thing about this technology is that companies will now be able to train their own data set and create their own predictions about future trends in search engine optimization. Previously, only those with access to AI tools at places like Google would have been able to do so in any meaningful way.
Most software is only capable of understanding patterns that are already predefined by humans, such as patterns in images or text. This means that things like logo design will not be going anywhere any time soon because the software will never be able to come up with brand-new logos completely on its own.
The Future Of AI Content In SEO
It is truly incredible how far we have come in a relatively short period of time when it comes to technology and AI. Things like GPT-3 point to the fact that we are going to be able to rely on machines more than ever before in the future.
While we may not see this generation-changing technology come to the public in the near future, I do believe that it will one day play a very important role in how our lives are affected in the coming decades.
We are still years away from this sort of software being accurate enough to take over most of the tasks that we do in online marketing today, but I do believe that if we wait long enough it will happen someday.
I believe that in the future we will have to install various sensors in our homes, cars, and most likely all of our technology in order to create a truly symbiotic relationship between people and machines. The human brain is just an incredibly complicated system that has both the capacity for great creativity along with great intelligence. It does not take a genius to figure out that combining these two abilities together could result in powerful means of interacting with technology.
As it stands today, such advanced technology like Google’s DeepMind or OpenAI that Google has been investing so much money into is very limited in what the public can do with it. This type of technology can be misused for nefarious purposes, fake news, manipulation, and even life-threatening medical advice.
General Content Implications of GTP-3
The most obvious implication to me of GPT-3 is that it is a “general” AI. It can be trained to read any language with an alphabet, and has been used in different languages to answer various questions that have been asked. GPT-3 is not specifically limited to one niche or market.
It was designed with the purpose of providing customized responses to any question that it would get asked and the focus was on whether or not the answer was correct, not on making it humorous or interesting. This leaves the door open for creative applications by content marketers with good copywriting skills.
GPT-3 and SEO
I believe that GPT-3 opens up the possibility of having “artificial SEO experts” in the future. While this is not the robotic AI takeover that I am hinting at on this blog, it is still a step in that direction.
Since GPT-3 can understand text and has been trained on large bodies of text, it can be used to rank content based on factors that aren’t explicitly covered in a keyword analysis. For example, GPT-3 can be trained to give higher rankings to content with great copywriting skills over longer pieces of work without as many engaging paragraphs or sentences.
Imagine an application that can constantly monitor the top Google results for a given keyword, and automatically adjust the content of a page to better compete with the top 10 results in real time. This would be a game-changer in the SEO world. But we are a very long way from seeing that become a reality due to the amount of research, development, testing, and server power that it would take to run an app like this. The ROI and marketing efforts for such an app would have to be so incredibly high-priced in order to sustain this business model that it is simply not practical to build such an app at this time.
Google’s current stance on generated content
Google is currently taking a hardline stance on content generated by programs that are not actively trying to make money (generally referred to as ‘grey hat’) but instead have a purpose of making money in another way, such as through AdSense income. However, Google has not shut down any grey hat applications that were not caught with their hands in the cookie jar.
One thing that I believe we will see GPT-3 doing in the future is reading news articles and aggregating information about trending topics.
This does not mean that Google is suddenly going to start conspiring against quality content on the web, but GPT-3 may still be used to manipulate a ranking factor in the future. The good news is that this won’t become common practice so it is unlikely to have any kind of widespread influence on how you write articles at this time.
Writing Tools That Use GPT-3 Technology
We should also keep in mind that Google is already using content analysis methods to determine article quality. However, as an SEO tester in a group of SEO testers around the world that frequently tests these types of things, we have confirmed that Google does not care about article quality as much as you would think. After all, it is still a machine and not as discerning as a human being is.
I believe the potential use of GPT-3 for writing articles may be used as a way to further refine the ideas and the writing process, which will help writers gain more insight into what makes a good article.
There are many writing tools available that can make writing articles easier for you. I have used several of these tools at the same time and found that this method has helped me write my SEO content articles faster and with better quality.
Here are just a few of the AI writing tools that we have tested in no particular order.
- ShortlyAI
- Nichesss
- Writesonic
- Snazzy AI
- CopySmith
- Headlime

- Jenni AI
Conclusion
There are a lot of implications from GPT-3. From a creative perspective, this may open up new doors for English-based authors who want to compete with more native language writers and gain more readership. It may even expand the possibilities for search marketing and lead generation in ways that we cannot even imagine now.
If you’ve ever wondered what an article looks like that has been written with GPT-3 technology and if it can actually rank on Google for many various SEO terms, well this very article you just read contains 60% content that was generated by GPT-3. It will never write a perfect article. But it can help you fill in the pieces that your brain seems to get blocked and can help you overcome your writers block.
